San Diego's first ever Night Market makes it inaugural opening to huge crowds! As it stands, this monthly event is located on the corner of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Convoy St. Opening at 5pm and running until 10pm, this night event features Asian cuisine, Entertainment and Culture.
A night market with food! We'll be there!
Heading toward the Convoy area, we already know that the Night Market is extremely busy. Through the stream of updates on Twitter about the #NightMarket, we've learned that the event is packed . And, based on the number of people tweeting about this event, it would seem that everyone with a social media voice will be there. We're excited to check it out!
Driving down Clairemont Mesa Blvd., we begin seeing a growing number of people walking toward the parking lot just to the left of Zion. Driving closer, I can see a mass of humanity funneling into a large cluster of tents full of lights, banners, and billowing with smoke from unseen food grills. That's our destination.
Luckily, we find parking quickly and only one block away. Walking toward the tents, we are swallowed by the flood of people heading into the Night Market.
We reach the entrance, and quickly see that the place is indeed packed! I have a feeling that the organizers did not plan for this many people to show up.
Excited to check out the entire market before eating, we decide to make our round.
First, we see Drive-By-Cinema which is "part milk truck, part public experiment, slinging movies throughout San Diego when and where you least expect it." They show movies, tutorials and art videos with a mobile projector. Also, their setup is very kid-friendly!
We pass all kinds of vendor stalls that sell fitness supplies, clothing, anime, novelties, cultural goods and handcrafted items.
There are even multiple performance areas spread throughout the Night Market.
Having made nearly one circuit of the Night Market, we slowly move through the crowd, making our way toward the smell of food. We're getting hungry!
Slowly, very slowly, we push through the dense crowd, emerging just in front of the food stalls. In both directions, flames and smoke erupt from grills and BBQ's. It's smells so good! However, every line is incredibly long.
With more than 17 food stalls, we thought the lines might be a little bit shorter. Each food stall has no less than 30 people in line. However, I am a firm believer that a long line means great food! And, the Night Market does have a good selection of cuisines: Thai food, Filipino, Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Organic, and even a random Polish food truck.
Having not yet decided on which type of food to eat, we search for the shortest line.
Right away, we see a couple of tasty looking street food stalls. As huge fans of this kind of food, we are eager to try it, and quickly take our place in line.
After awhile in line, we notice that it doesn't seem to be moving. Growing hungrier by the minute, we decide to return to our hunt for a slightly shorter line. Barely a second in and Jigger has already seen Filipino Food. Nothing makes him happier than Filipino food! Honestly, I'm not exaggerating this fact at all. It smells so good, and it looks like only a few people are in line. And so, we stand in what we think is the line. However, we quickly realize that the line for this food stall begins just to the right of where we're standing and snakes back through the crowd and off into the horizon.
We search a bit longer for a place to grab a bite to eat. It's already 9:30pm, and the crowd seems to have grown. This place is even more packed than when we arrived. At this point, I'm confident to say that the organizers didn't expect so many people to turn up for the first event. However, this is a great sign! This Night Market is a much needed event in Convoy, and the sheer number of people here is proof that they agree. And although we decide to grab a bite down the street, we are still very excited for the future of the Night Market. I have a feeling that the next event will be even bigger and better.
Overall, it's great to have this in the area. Convoy is one of San Diego's best areas, one that has so many great restaurants and places for going out. The Night Market is a truly positive step toward developing this area into one of San Diego's most exciting neighborhoods.
